The Sao Carlos Theater is Lisbon's opera house. It was built in the 18th century in the Neoclassical style after the original great Lisbon opera house in Comercio Square was destroyed in the Great Earthquake. This theatre plays host to a number of operatic performances throughout the year. Classical concerts are also held here. Another major venue for music is the Coliseu dos Recreios.
