General Practitioner, Doctor, Physician in Munich

    2/04/2008

The German health care system has the reputation of being one of the best in the world. Waiting lists for treatments are rare. Hospitals are equipped with the latest technology and statutory health insurance scheme provides nearly full cover for most medical treatments and medicines. Almost everybody in Germany has access to this system, irrespective of income or social status.

In Germany, you are free to visit any doctor you like. You can make appointments quickly and easily. Also, you do not have to see a GP before visiting a private specialist. Most Germans have a favourite GP and many maintain a relationship with more than one but if they need to see a specialist they would not waste time seeing a GP first. Another plus point about healthcare in Germany is that there are plenty of specialists. So you can be sure that you are getting the best advice in the soonest possible manner.

The downside is that medical costs are high. There is no such thing as "free" treatment in Germany, not even in state hospitals. All care, including emergencies, has to be paid for by you or your health insurance! Hence, make sure your insurance is up-to-date and covers all your needs.
